What is the 14-19 Diploma?

The Diploma is a new qualification, part of the previous Labour Government's 14-19 reform programme.

It is highly flexible and combines theoretical and practical learning with functional skills in English, maths and ICT. It has been designed by employers for employers so that young people are better prepared for work.

The Diploma will not limit any future options for students. With this qualification, they could stay at school, go on to college, do a degree at university, start a career or an Apprenticeship.

To get a Diploma students will have to demonstrate functional skills, the core elements of English, maths and ICT, along with personal skills such as the ability to communicate and work in teams.

By 2011 the Diploma will be available in 14 subjects. See the full list and more detail on each Diploma subject|.

The Diploma is studied at three levels - Foundation, Higher and Advanced.

  • A Foundation Diploma is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D-G
  • The Higher Diploma is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A*-C
  • The Advanced Diploma is equivalent to 3.5 A levels
